Today, we want to share a deeply moving story with you – one about the courage and resilience shown by a young puppy named Fluffy.
Fluffy’s story is one of survival, but it is also a sobering reminder of the pain and suffering too many animals endure, often in silence, at the hands of the people who are supposed to take care of them and love them.
Last year, our inspectors received an urgent call about a 14-week-old Rottweiler puppy named Fluffy at a house in Perth’s eastern suburbs. He was in desperate need of help. Fluffy had a deep open wound on his neck that was infected and full of discharge.
When Inspector Peta arrived at the home, Fluffy’s owner refused to let her see him. Determined to fight for Fluffy’s welfare, Inspector Peta obtained an urgent warrant and was able to seize Fluffy from the property.

With the warrant granted, what Inspector Peta discovered was nothing short of heartbreaking. One glance was enough to know this was an injury so severe that it was clear something had gone terribly wrong.
Fluffy’s collar had been left on far too long – becoming tighter and tighter as he grew until it had become embedded into his young neck. This was no ordinary collar; it was a puppy collar, and as Fluffy grew, it should have been replaced. Instead, he was forced to wear it as it constricted and cut into his throat. This collar caused a deep, open wound about 10 centimetres long and 2 centimetres deep. His pain score was an unbearable three out of four. In fact, Fluffy’s injury was so severe that it could have become life-threatening if not treated immediately.
Fluffy underwent emergency surgery to remove the collar, and it was found that he had severe cellulitis, a painful infection, and a fever. This was a clear case of neglect – a situation that could have been avoided with proper care as simple as swapping out his puppy collar for a bigger one as he grew. As RSPCA WA Inspector Manager Kylie Green said, “At Fluffy’s young age, he relied totally on his owner caring for him and keeping him out of harm’s way, but she failed him.”
Fluffy couldn’t depend on his owner, he was let down severely.
